Our Story

H o w I t A l l B e g a n

The name Remhoogte is derived from the Dutch word’s “rem” meaning brake, and “hoogte” meaning heights, a reference to settlers who were moving more inland from the Cape. While navigating the steep slopes of Stellenbosch, these settlers relied on a form of handbrake to steady their wagons as they were moving through the mountains of Simonsberg.

While little is formally recorded of the estate’s earliest history, Remhoogte has long been a site for the growing of vineyards. It was in 1994, when Murray and Juliet Boustred acquired the farm, that its next chapter began, one defined by a commitment to producing wines from the estate’s own fruit.

With careful restoration of the property, new vineyard plantings, and the construction of a cellar, the foundation was laid for what Remhoogte is today. The first wines, five barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon, was produced in 1995.

In 2007, Chris Boustred, son of Murry and Juliet, joined the estate as winemaker, bringing with him experience from Stellenbosch, Bordeaux, Margaret River, and Napa Valley. His return signalled a renewed focus on quality and vineyard expression. He was later joined by his brother Rob in 2011, who took on the role of Sales and Marketing, completing the next generation of the family’s involvement.

Today, brothers Chris and Rob Boustred work alongside their father Murray, continuing a legacy built on family, and a continued belief in the potential of its vineyards. We make wines to be felt, wines of presence, depth, and undeniable character and that showcase the very best of our terroir.

We believe our wines are made in the vineyards, where every decision begins with the land. Our unique position in Stellenbosch, on the southern tip of Africa, offers ideal conditions for producing wines of character and precision, shaped by cooling ocean influences and varied terrain.

The interplay between diverse soils, steep slopes, and carefully selected varietals allows us to cultivate fruit of depth and balance. This considered approach in the vineyard forms the foundation of our wines, complex, expressive, and reflective of both place and intent.

Vines have been grown on the estate since 1812, with early plantings concentrated in the valleys and lower slopes. In the mid-1990s, a shift in focus led to the replanting of vineyards higher up the slopes, in search of cooler sites and better-drained soils.

Today, each varietal is carefully matched to its specific site, ensuring optimal expression of both fruit and terroir. The vineyards range in age from newly planted blocks to vines over 38 years old, with eight grape varieties cultivated across the estate.
